There is 2 years in between my pictures of arthritis, showing how my finger is getting more crooked because the bones inside keep on growing.

2 years have passed sine my last post about Pernaton Gel soothing the arthritis pain on my index finger. So what has happened meanwhile?

• no needle pain in my finger
   
• the top of my finger bends down and to the right
   
• hitting my finger against a door, wall… brings back an enormous pain
   
• the Pernaton Gel does sooth the pain but doesn’t cure my arthritis

It’s clear that the bones of the top joint of my finger (see my X Ray arthritis picture) are still growing due to touching each other.

Meanwhile I :

• have lost grip,
   
• do drop things from time to time and
   
• can’t completely bend nor completely straighten my arthritis index finger.

Pernaton’s Green Lipped Mussels Extract

2 months ago, I received free samples of Pernaton Gel: a cream said to be useful when you have arthritis.

Pernaton Gel contains green lipped mussels extract. And green lipped mussels – a product from mother nature herself – got in my attention because they contain high doses of Glucosamine.

One Pernaton Green Lipped Mussel Gel was send to Malaysia, but since the Malaysian mail works slow and I was heading for Europe, Pernaton shipped me a second free sample to Europe. Just as well!

How is my arthritis finger?

After 2 months of using Pernaton Green Lipped Mussel Gel: how is my arthritis finger?

• still a bit crooked
   
• the needle sharp pain that came on and of hasn’t come for a long time now
   
• a constant pain at the background as if my finger is burning inside remains, yet gets soothed each time I apply the Pernaton Green Lipped Mussel Gel. The gel has a cooling effect on my finger
   
• less strength in the top of my finger, which makes me drop utensils regularly: very unpractical when cooking in a kitchen

I have the impression my finger’s arthritis is in a status quo and I am rid of the annoying "needle pain" thanks to the free Pernaton gel.

Enjoy permanent arthritis pain relief : that would be the million dollar arthritis drug …

For my arthritis treatment, I was expecting a green lipped mussel glucosamine gel by mail.

The mailman in Malaysia must have some kind of arthritis as well, as I never saw him about delivering me the "green lipped mussels" glucosamine cream.

The folks at Pernaton are so great to re-send another sample to me in Europe, this is what I call service!

Flexium Gel

Meanwhile I am almost running out of my horse chestnut gel : Reparil Gel.

Making sure my stay in Europe wouldn’t be damped by arthritis pain, I went to see my old doctor. He said:

Reparil Gel? You better take Flexium Gel.

So I went to the pharmacy and did just that: buying Flexium Gel

Flexium gel is used for people with back pain or any other acute pain like muscle pain.

Glucosamine Gel

I am crossing fingers – easy with my all but straight arthritis finger – that the requested Green Lipped Mussel Gel containing glucosamine will arrive soonest.

Unfortunately, green lipped mussels are grown in New Zealand. Being in Belgium now, the closest to mussels will be the famous Zeeuws-Vlaanderen Dutch black mussels.

Unfortunately they are not known to contain much glucosamine nor does folklore talk about black mussels used in arthritis treatments.

Arthritis treatments with horse chestnut

The above picture shows my X-ray arthritis picture osteo-arthritis index finger. My finger is a little swollen because of some extra bone-growth on the right side of my finger.

Although a little swollen only, the constant rubbing of the bones cause a constant pain, unless I don’t move my fingers. It’s a nuisance to say the least.

My not too straight arthritis finger points to a horse chestnut containing gel : Reparil gel.

Horse Chestnut Supplement

Do you recognize the fresh fruit in the left picture? Right, it is chestnut.

Do not get mixed up now: this is not the regular chestnut you can easily find people roasting next to the road in Malaysia (especially in Kuala Lumpur China town you will find one).

I already wrote a post in Quick Dinner Recipes that Horse Chestnut is not suitable for eating nor cooking but works as an arthritis treatment.

Horse chestnut has commercial value as:

• horse chestnut supplement
   
• horse chestnut extract
   
• horse chestnut cream and
   
• horse chestnut gel.

In Reparil Gel, horse chestnut is only one of the ingredients. In stead of writing the English name "Horse Chestnut", the Latin name "Aescin" is used.

Aescin

The horse chestnut seeds are the source of a saponin known as aescin:

• aescin promotes circulation through the veins
   
• aescin fosters normal tone in the walls of the veins, thereby promoting return of blood to the heart.

In Europe chest nut supplements are popular for:

• the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency and,
   
• the treatment of varicose veins.

As you can see, it’s not your ideal arthritis treatment but I always say: don’t put your eggs in only one basket. When it comes to health: always go for as many products, diets, cures as possible in stead of trying to find the miracle cure. Unless there is a proven miracle cure out there.

Aescin possesses anti-inflammatory properties, and this is where osteo-arthritis comes in.

Although it’s not clear whether I really have an inflammation or not, as long as I don’t have the green lipped mussels gel shipped over, I stick with the horse chestnut gel and let my finger rest as much as possible (which means typing with 9 fingers…).

Arthritis picture of my left index finger

My arthritis symptoms started with a minor joint pain at the top joint of my left index finger (the finger I use for cutting garlic). As you can see on the arthritis picture below the red arrows: the joint was swollen as well.

The X-ray clearly shows that the top bones are rubbing on each other.

Obviously that is what is causing my constant – yet minor – joint pain.

It was not an inflammation as I wanted myself to believe in. Who want to acknowledge he has arthritis symptoms at 43? Not me!

First thing my doctor gave me was some arthritis pain medication – Celebrex -, which made me sleep like an angel.

When the pain medication was finished, the symptoms of arthritis were still there.

I would have been too much an optimist to believe that the little bony growth causing my swollen joint would become smaller.

It took me some time to get real actually: no swollen joint because of inflammation, yet because of osteoarthritis. Which is still better than having rheumatoid arthritis…

I was recently diagnosed with arthritis symptoms in my left index finger.

It turned out to be "only" osteoarthritis. Now I surely don’t want to start arthritis pain medication like Celebrex as long as I can stand the pain and I can find a cure for my arthritis.

My quest for Arthritis Treatments

… is also a quest to find people like you who want to share your arthritis story in a comment!

Arthritis treatments: which one really works? Is there a cure in the first place? Is it really a good idea to straighten my finger in an operation? Not really the ideal cure for me as being a chef I do use my index finger most frequently.

My other quest is to find arthritis treatments that work. How?

By gathering free arthritis medication samples and testing them out on myself.

I will write down the results of these arthritis treatments, so you can see which arthritis
treatments do work.

Yet always remember: every person is different. Some people get cured by praying to God… A cure for me doesn’t mean a cure for everybody.
